Severe Joint Pain and Arthritis

Causes of severe joint pains

This article will discuss Severe Joint Pain and Arthritis, a very common problem all over the world.

Severe Joint Pain and Arthritis are caused by inflammation in the joints due to accumulation of fluids and inflammatory cells inside the joints. Another factor is the  increase in the blood flow inside the joints in order to accelerate the healing process and help recovery. All these factors culminate to the point that patients start to feel severe pain, swelling and sometimes redness in their joints. The severity of pain and joint discomfort depends on the degree of inflammation in the joint, the more the inflammation, the more is the pain and the swelling.

What are the Natural Treatments for Severe Joint Pains and Arthritis?

Natural Care for inflamed joints depends mainly on reducing or controlling the inflammation as mentioned above. This is regardless of the joint affected or the original cause of the joint pain. The tools and measures we use at the clinic for managing joint pains are many such as

1-      Acupuncture: Acupuncture is the use of tiny needles to be inserted inside the affected joint a certain way to be sure that the needle is right inside the joint cavity. The idea of using Acupuncture in treating joint pains and arthritis is that it helps stimulate the microcirculation inside the joints so by enhancing the circulation, the inflammation inside the knee joint will subside in response to disposing of the inflammation molecules that cause pain and swelling inside the joint and inviting white blood cells that remove the inflammation debris and end products of the inflammation, So, the result will be a reduction of pain and swelling. At the clinic, we apply electrostimulation, a mechanical vibration machine attached to the needles to accelerate the healing process and control the inflammation.

Is there scientific research that supports the use of Acupuncture in Joint pains and Arthritis?

The simple answer to this question is YES, in 2018 Seca et al published comprehensive research on the use of Acupuncture in treating Arthritis and Joint Pains based on many randomized clinical trials in many countries in Europe, the United States, and China and included 974 patients. The result of this research was that Acupuncture is a very effective Treatment for Pain Relief and Inflammation relief for arthritis and joint pains. Not only pain relief, but also restoration of joint movement, range of motion, and function. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11655-018-2914-x

2-      Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF):   Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF), is a newly introduced service at the Ontario Naturopathic Clinic that helps to improve joint recovery and reduce pain related to Joint Diseases and Arthritis. It is basically, an emission of electromagnetic waves within the safe human range (less than 60 Hz) that works by improving the blood flow to the joints, helping recovery, and accelerating the response to other treatment modalities. It does not cause pain when directed to the patient’s joints, only slight heat and sometimes a sense of vibrations. Most of the time, the patient does not feel anything during the treatment.

3-      Cupping: It is simply the suction of the deep blood flow to the joints and muscles to help healing of the joints. It works by creating a negative pressure on the skin after squeezing the air from the silicone cups then negative pressure helps pull the blood from underneath deep vascular tubes to the joints and muscles, and this accelerates the healing of the joints and promotes recovery.

4-      Herbals and Supplements: Many herbals and supplements support the use of one or more of the modalities mentioned. For example, turmeric herb is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and when used in an extract form (not the actual herb), it boosts its anti-inflammatory functions and helps to a great extent healing and recovery. Many supplements are available now for Arthritis and Joint Pains, however, the choice of the right herb or supplement and the right dose, frequency, and duration of treatment with these herbs is the responsibility of licensed healthcare professionals as they have the knowledge and expertise to guide you to the best combination or types of herbs/supplements that suit your condition.
