High Dose Vitamin C and Breast Cancer

The relationship between High Dose Vitamin C and Breast Cancer is not very clear, not only from the public point of view but also among most Health Care Professionals.

People know vitamin C for its role in immune boosting and possible prevention of viral infections such as colds and flu, and many people usually take a regular daily dose of vitamin C to support their health and protect them from viral illnesses, even without a medical advise, and this is due to many  reasons such as it high safety profile, being a natural product that comes from citrus plans such as oranges and mandarins and also being  easily available as an over the counter supplement with no need for any medical prescription.

What supports  Vitamin C  wide spread use is the trust that millions of people have with using the vitamin C and the strong belief that it really helps them to support their immunity and protect them against viral infections.

The role of the Intravenous Vitmain C is still in its infancy, although this IV form has been known for many decades, and this may be due to many factors such as the lack of proper scientific knowledge about the role of the Intravenous Vitmain C, the Inconvenience of being administered  Intravenously and also the cost of the administration.

The topic of this article will be focused on the  High Dose Vitamin C and Breast Cancer.

We focus today on  Breast Cancer as it is one of the most common types of Cancer all over the world, and it impacts the health and survival for many women.

One of the goals for  implementing an alternative medicine in patients with cancer is to improve their quality of life , overall performance and immune support. One way of implementing the alternative (sometimes called naturopathic medicine) in improving the quality of life for patients with Breast Cancer is administering the High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C to these patients.

A recent research (Mansoor et al  2021) https://www.cureus.com/articles/58349-impact-of-intravenous-vitamin-c-administration-in-reducing-severity-of-symptoms-in-breast-cancer-patients-during-treatment
) was published in 2021 about this topic.
This research was carried out in an Oncology Tertiary care Hospital in Pakistan whereby a total number of 350 patients with various stages of Breast Cancer were included in this research, and the patients were randomized at 1:1 ratio to either standard oncology care only versus the oncology care and a weekly High Dose Intravenous Vitmain C infusion at 25 Grams every week for 4 weeks.

At the end of this research, the group of patients who received the High Dose Intravenous Vitmain C had less nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue. For detailed information about this research you can check the link above.

One of the most contentious points about the administration of the High Dose Intravenous Vitmain C and the Standard Oncology Care is the Possible Negative Interaction between it and the Standard Oncology Care.

It should be noted that when the Vitamin C is administered at High Doses, its role changes from being an Anti-Oxidant (which in this case could potentially oppose the standard oncology care), to a Pro Oxidant which should not interfere with the standard care.

In the end, it was concluded that more studies are needed to confirm the benefits of the High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C and Breast Cancer and also to be sure that it would not impact the survival or disease control for patients with Breast Cancer.

It is also recommended to consult your oncologist as your health care provider before attempting any of the alternaive health care options,
