The extent of the problem
In any year, one in five Canadians experiences a mental health or drug abuse problem. 70% of the mental health problems happen during the childhood period. Astonishingly, 34% of Ontario High Scholars have moderate to severe anxiety and depression. These data are updated from the Center for Addiction and Mental Health http://www.camh.ca/en/hospital/about_camh/newsroom/for_reporters/Pages/addictionmentalhealthstatistics.aspx
How can we identify the problem?
If you feel that your mood is low, stressed out, low self-esteem, sleeping poorly, drastic changes in your appetite or food needs (either very low appetite or voracious appetite), or you cannot deal properly with your family members or colleagues then you need to seek help for supporting your mental health and see if you developed anxiety or depression.
Role of the Psychiatrists
The Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. They start their encounter with patients by taking a full history and may perform a physical exam and sometimes ask for blood work to reach the proper diagnosis. They treat anxiety and stress with medications such as mood stabilizers and antidepressants. They can refer you to a specialist in psychology called a clinical psychologist to help you de-stress and relieve your emotions.
