Treatment of lung cancer
Lung Cancer treatment is a multidisciplinary management plan that includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and biologic agents. Many lines of chemotherapy for lung cancer are established now such as Taxol Carboplatinum, Taxol Gemcitabine, Pemetrexed, and VP16. Possible complications: nausea, vomiting, immune system failure, hair loss, fatigue, bruises, and mouth sores.
What is new?
For Non-small lung cancer novel agents are now in use that work by targeting cancer cellular receptors that may attack cancer's new blood vessel generation process and hence kill cancer cells such as Bevazucimab (Avastin), and Ramucirumab(Cyramza). Although they have fewer side effects than chemotherapy, they do have their problems such as developing high blood pressure, bleeding, headaches, and mouth sores.
Targeted drugs against EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors) such as Erlotinib(Tarceva), Gefitinib (Iressa), and Afatinib( Gilotrif) play a significant role in the management of Non-small lung cancer either alone or with chemotherapy. Although they exert anti-tumour effects, they have side effects such as diarrhea, mouth sores, and skin rashes.
How can Naturopathic Medicine help?
Naturopathic medicine can improve your response to different therapies, target angiogenesis (formation of a new blood vessel by a tumor), create oxidative damage around the cancer cells, and last but not least, improve your general well-being and reduce the toxic effects of chemotherapy or targeted agents.
